Influence of Site of Blood Withdrawal and Stage of Fast on Concentrations of Plasma Free Amino Acids in the Growing Pig

Abstract

Typpo et al. (1970) reported that concentrations of free amino acids in plasma from the abdominal aorta of growing pigs peaked at 2 to 4 hr. post-feeding. The levels of plasma free amino acids that were first limiting in the diet decreased at relatively rapid rates following the initial post-feeding increases. All of the free essential amino acids in the plasma reached apparent baseline levels by 12 hr. post-feeding with exception of those amino acids that were present in excess in the diet. Also, some amino acids increased in the plasma during the period from 18 to 36 hr. of fast, apparently due to their release from tissue proteins catabolized to provide energy. Copyright © 1970.
