Abstract
Acid in the duodenum inhibits gastric motility. HC1 solutions varying from 0.1 N to 0.01 N were instilled directly into the duodenum while gastric motility was recorded. As the HC1 concentration and the volume were reduced, inhibition became progressively shorter. Twenty-five cc of 0.01 N HC1 inhibited gastric motility for only 3 minutes. In 3 patients with histamine achlorhydria 0.1 N HC1 in the duodenum produced the same gastric inhibition as in normal subjects. Keywords
