Abstract
In the first part of this paper we describe measurements of the radiation pattern of the acoustic emission (AE) signals emitted when a penny-shaped crack of Mode I type is generated in a glass plate by pressing a rigid conical indenter onto the surface. It is shown that the orientation of a crack determined from the radiation pattern of the emitted AE signals is in agreement to within several degrees with a direct optical determination. Keywords
