Morphology of Plasticized Polyvinylchloride

Abstract
The morphology and the effect of plasticizer on the morphology of polyvinylchloride (PVC) were studied. Electron microscopy indicates that PVC contains aggregates on three size scales: 100 Å to 200 Å, 0.1 to0.5μ.and 1 to 10μ. The smallest of these structures are nodules which increase in size with the addition of plasticizer (DOP). This indicates that plasticizer diffuses into and disrupts the chain packing within these nodules. This has been confirmed by wide and small angle x-ray diffraction.
