EXTRACTION AND PURIFICATION OF HUMAN PITUITARY GONADOTROPIN*

Abstract
The development of methods for the extraction of gonadotropin from the urine of men and postmenopausal women by the kaolin-acetone procedure is detailed. Further purification of the crude gonadotropic material was accomplished by alcohol-salt fractionation, which results in a yield of 4 mg. of solids per liter of original urine. The slope of the biologic assay of human pituitary gonadotropin remains unchanged throughout the purification procedures and is the same regardless of the source of urine or the procedures used for purification.
