Uric Acid Retention Due to Hydrochlorothiazide

Abstract

ELEVATION of the serum uric acid after the administration of chlorothiazide was noted by Laragh, Heinemann and Demartini¹ in the course of investigating the diuretic properties of the drug. Oren et al.² reported 2 cases of gouty arthritis and elevated serum uric acid in patients receiving prolonged chlorothiazide therapy for hypertension. It is the purpose of this paper to present a similar case and to record some observations on the serum uric acid and urinary urate excretion after the administration of hydrochlorothiazide.Case ReportJ.F.
