Seed fats of the Umbelliferae

Abstract
Investigations (methods outlined) were carried on with seed of Foenicu-lum capillaceum Gilib., Daucus carota L., Coriandrum sativum L., Apium graveolans L., Pastinaca sativa L., Chaerophyllium sativum Gartn., and Carum carvi L. In every case petroselinic acid, reported earlier from the seed of 2 wild sp., is present in quantity, constituting 26-60% of the fatty acid present. Other acids present are palmitic, 1-8%; oleic, 0.5-40%; and linoleic, 7-53.5%. The presence of resinous and unsaponifiable matter adds to the difficulty of quantitative determinations of the fats.
