Completeness of Birth Registration in the United States in 1940

Abstract

During the 1940 census a special effort was made to test the completeness of birth registration in the U. S. The test was conducted simultaneously for every state in the country. The % of the completeness of birth registration in the U. S. is tabulated by states; it varies from 77.6% (S. Carolina) to 99.4% (Connecticut). The importance of birth registration is emphasized.
