Acne Vulgaris

Abstract
The fatty acids from 42 isolates of Corynebacterium acnes were studied by gas-liquid chromatography, and ranged from C10 to C18 with trace amounts of fatty acids above C18. The predominant fatty acid had a carbon number of 14.66, the relative carbon number of isobranched C15 fatty acid. No significant differences were found in the fatty acid pattern of the C acnes from patients with and without acne. We believe this excludes the alternative that irritant (medium chain length, eg, C8 to C14) fatty acids are derived from C acnes.
