Abstract
Quantum statistical mechanics is applied to derive the expression for the current response of electrons in metals, caused by an electromagnetic disturbance. The expression is closely connected with the space-time correlation of electronic momenta. Examples are given to show that diamagnetism is essentially determined by spatial correlation. Keywords
