THE EFFECT OF THE CONTINUOUS INTRAVENOUS INJECTION OF RINGER'S SOLUTION ON THE BLOOD CHEMISTRY OF THYRO-PARATHYROIDECTOMIZED DOGS

Abstract
A complete thyro-parathyroidectomy was performed on 7 adult dogs. The continuous intravenous injection of Ringer''s solution in amounts of 2000 to 3000 c.c. per 24 hrs. prevented the onset of tetany but did not prevent the usual decrease in the concn. of serum Ca. Isolated frog muscles suspended in 0.7% NaCl solution developed spontaneous rhythmical contractions which were abolished by the addition of as little as 1 to 2 mgm. of Ca per 100 cc. of soln. Such muscles suspended in physiological salt solns. containing all of the inorganic salts of the serum but no Ca displayed no spontaneous activity.
