FUNCTIONS OF PARTING CEREMONIES IN DYING ORGANIZATIONS.

Abstract
This paper advances a theory about the functions that parting ceremonies serve for members displaced by organizational deaths. The theory is grounded in data from 11 parties, picnics, and dinners that occurred in six dying organizations. We propose that parting ceremonies create settings in which people can exchange emotional support and can edit self-, social system, and event schemata. We also assert that such gatherings provide opportunities for managers to influence the course of organizational demise.
