Abstract
Upper bounds on solutions of the nonlinear Poisson—Boltzmann equation are obtained. The relationship of these bounds with certain assumptions in Manning's limiting law theory for polyelectrolytes is discussed. In particular, it is shown that Manning's condensation assumption may be dropped without changing the important consequences of his theory. Keywords
