Abstract
This paper examines the influence of zirconium and chromium on the grain refinement of aluminium alloy castings using an Al—Ti—B type grain refiner master alloy. The casting alloys and grain refiner were prepared from 99.99% purity aluminium. In some castings Fe or Si was added in addition to the Zr or Cr. No adverse influence of Cr on grain refinement was observed. The adverse effect of Zr on grain refinement found for certain compositions appears to relate to the interaction of Zr with the other added solute element as opposed to the poisoning of potential nucleating substrates.
