Communal entropy of disordered systems

Abstract
The concept of communal entropy associated with a non-crystalline solid phase is discussed. It is shown that the communal entropy of the disordered system is essentially that of the ordered system reduced by the configurational entropy deriving from the disorder. The effect of a static cell size distribution in the cell model description of the disordered system is found to give rise to an additional but small contribution to the communal entropy of this sytem. For the random close-packed hard sphere model this additional contribution is roughly three orders of magnitude smaller than the leading term.
