Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors which produce or amplify vibration and airborne noise of alternating current induction motors, and to determine how this noise and vibration may be eliminated or attenuated. This study is specifically concerned with 60 cycle induction motors and various formulas throughout the report have incorporated this frequency into the equation constants. The theory, however, is more general and may be applied to other input frequencies. Motor vibration was of greater interest than airborne noise in this study. Study performed under this contract falls into three categories: literature study, theoretical analysis, and test evaluation. Material obtained in the literature study has been incorporated into this report to make it as comprehensive as possible. Both the theoretical work performed under this contract and that reported in the literature was verified by testing sample motors. The results of this study are summarized in a list of recommended design criteria for low noise induction motors.
