Abstract
The case report of a man aged 70 is used to illustrate the necessity of adequate, long-term, complete intravenous (i.v.) nutrition without oral feeding, in order to maintain body weight and a good nutritional condition without wasting diarrhoea after massive intestinal resection due to acute occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery. Complete i.v. feeding was performed for 69 days after the operation. The average daily intake during the second month was 3.58 1 water, 2,850 kcal, 70 g amino acids, 405 g carbohydrates, 100 g fat (Intralipid 20%) and all other required nutrients. He left the hospital 3 months after the operation in good condition.
