FETOMATERNAL GAS EXCHANGE

Abstract
The average oxygen pressure difference across the human placenta in normal pregnancy equalled approximately 24.0 mm.Hg. In abnormal pregnancy the value was significantly lower. Despite variations in maternal total bicarbonate and hydrogen ion concentration when compared to the fetus, the carbon dioxide pressure was usually about 7.0 mm. higher in fetal blood. In complicated delivery the carbon dioxide gradient was 21.0 mm. Hg.
