Abstract
A model is analyzed for the growth and propagation of electrostatic waves in a medium with an arbitrary law of mobility. The equation of motion has been solved by the method of characteristics. Shock-wave criteria are developed. Special emphasis is given to the anomalous case where the average carrier velocity can decrease with field, which, as pointed out by Kroemer, is pertinent to the Gunn effect. Keywords
