The Nephrotic Syndrome Secondary to Acute Glomerulonephritis During Falciparum Malaria

Abstract
Although endemic malaria has been virtually eradicated from this country, our present military commitment in Southeast Asia, together with the ease of worldwide travel into endemic areas, makes it incumbent upon physicians to be cognizant of the various manifestations of this disorder. Renal tubular disease in falciparum malaria as manifested by hemoglobinuric nephrosis ("blackwater fever") is a well-established entity; the occurrence of significant glomerular dysfunction is not well-recognized. Attention was drawn to this possibility by Thayer (1) in 1898 who discussed 340 patients, 58% of whom had albuminuria and 25%, cylindruria during the course of subtertian malaria. Since then sporadic
