THE PROBLEM OF PNEUMONIA WITH REFERENCE TO CHEMO- AND SERO-THERAPY

Abstract
Over a 2-yr. period the case fatality rate of pneumocoocal pneumonia in adults has been reduced by at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. It seems to have been stabilized at between 7 and 8%. Sulfathiazole and sulfapyridine seem to be equally effective in the treatment of pneumococcal pneumonia in adult patients. Sulfathiazole causes less nausea and vomiting than does sulfapyridine. Patients who are severely ill with pneumococcal pneumonia should receive both type-specific serum and either sulfathiazole or sulfapyridine.
