Among twenty-seven inbred strains of mice only one, SWR/J, was found to show a strong aversion to the bitter taste of strychnine in dilute solution. This characteristic segregated in backcross progeny and appears to be determined by the gene Soa , which also determined the ability to taste the bitter sugar derivative sucrose octaacetate.
