An Efficient Method for Predicting Unburned Carbon in Boilers

Abstract
A model was developed to predict unburned carbon in pulverized coal-fired furnaces and industrial and utility boilers. The model is a one-dimensional description of the complex processes: flow. combustion and heat transfer. Models for devolatilization and char oxidation, turbulence and gas-phase combustion are used to simulate a test furnace and industrial and utility boilers. A total of 39 examples were evaluated and show good agreement of predictions with data. The results clearly indicate the approach has potential as an engineering tool to evaluate unburned carbon in boilers.
