On the Neutrons from the N14(d, n)O15 Reaction

Abstract
The energy spectrum and the angular distribution of the neutrons from the N 14 ( d , n )O 15 reaction were investigated by the photographic plate method. The energy of the bombarding deuterons was 1.85 MeV, and the Q -value corresponding to the ground state of O 15 nucleus was obtained to be (5.21±0.07) MeV. The low energy neutron group corresponding to the first excited state of O 15 nucleus was also observed, but it overlapped with the contaminated C 12 ( d , n )N 13 neutrons and the accurate Q -value could not be determined. The estimated rough value was about -0.1 MeV. The angular distribution of the high energy neutron group has a maximum at about 20 degrees (c.m.s.) and decreases considerably beyond this maximum, indicating the stripping process corresponding to l p =1. This reaction may be a good source of neutrons of about 7 MeV at the bombarding energies of deuterons below 2 MeV.
