Abstract
In 69% of 941 alcoholics in the postintoxication state, mephenesin (3-orthotoloxy-l, 2-propanediol) was effective in promptly alleviating tremors and gastrointestinal symptoms. Agitation was relieved in 50%, but depression and disturbances of sleep were improved in less than 10%. Combination of mephenesin with a sedative (acetylbromdiethylacetylcarbamid) and stimulant (amphetamine sulfate and desoxyephedrine HCl) enhanced the results in different combinations of symptoms. Mephenesin in combination with atropine sulfate was effective.
