Food of Merlins nesting in young conifer forest

Abstract

This study found that, while Merlins nested readily in young conifer plantations, they did not alter their prey spectrum but continued to hunt over moorland. Hence continuing afforestation of moorland below 250 m poses a serious threat to the existence of Merlins in such regions.
