Further Studies on the Relationship of Nicotinic Acid, Tryptophane and Protein in the Nutrition of the Pig

Abstract
Adequate amounts of DL-tryptophane as supplements to a low protein corn ration will prevent nicotinic acid deficiency in the pig. Supplementation of the same low protein ration with nicotinic acid seems to increase the utilization of dietary tryptophane. No symptoms of nicotinic acid deficiency were produced on a corn ration containing 25% casein. Moreover, pigs fed this high protein ration grew very rapidly and required only 1.96 pounds of feed to produce 1 pound gain in body weight. Mild symptoms of nicotinic acid deficiency were produced in pigs whose calculated average daily intake of nicotinic acid was 17.4 mg.
