Diet and dietary habits of nomads in Iraq

Abstract
The daily dietary intakes of unsettled nomadic adults were observed. The intake of major nutrients based on published analytical values was calculated and compared to the recommended levels suggested by the NAS [National Academy of Science] and the FAO/WHO joint committees. Intakes of calories, protein, Ca, P, Fe, thiamine, riboflavine and niacin appeared to be adequate. The intakes of vitamin A and ascorbic acid were lower than the recommended figures. The settled tribes of nomads could be more at risk nutritionally than the unsettled nomads. Tea, sugar and bread are substituting for animal products and are the major daily staple foods.
