Abstract
A force balance approach to particle entrainment is adopted and leads to a model which is in good agreement with experimental data and correlations. The model can be written in dimensionless form involving four groups. Because of its mechanistic basis it has several advantages over correlations of (non-dimensionalised) experimental data. Keywords
