The natural history of the Hardangerfjord 8. Quantity and composition of the zooplankton, September 1955 – September 1956

Abstract

Monthly samples of zooplankton were collected in Hardangerfjorden from September 1955 to September 1956. The material was sampled at five permanent stations with a Nansen net in vertical hauls. Volume of zooplankton and number of organisms were lower in the fjord than at the outer stations, but the number of species was somewhat higher in the fjord. Three or four spawnings of Calanus finmarchicus were recorded, and all the spawnings seemed to be equally important. Seven species of copepods constituted 84% of the total number of organisms; three of these species were more abundant in the fjord than in the coastal water, three were more abundant in the coastal water, and one was equally abundant in all of the investigated area.
