The occurence of methyl ethers of rhamose and fucose in specific glycolipids of certain mycobacteria

Abstract
A glycolipid was isolated from ethanol-ether extracts of photochromogenic strains of "atypical" acid-fast bacteria. It contained 2-O-methyl-fucose, 2-O-methylrhamnose and 2:4-di-O-methylrhamnose. Another glycolipid, obtained from a strain of Mycobacterium bovis, contained 2-O-methylrhamnose alone. A scheme for the tentative identification of small amounts of O-methylated 6-deoxyhexoses is described.
