Effect of Nephrosis on Renal Qo2 and Histochemical Appearance of Cytochrome Oxidase and Succinic Dehydrogenase

Abstract
A statistically significant decrease in renal Qo2 was observed in kidney slices from rats with the nephrotic syndrome induced by the subcutaneous injection of aminonucleoside. The addition of this agent in vitro failed to alter the Q02 of kidney slices from normal rats and normal values were obtained in rats receiving aminonucleoside who did not develop nephrosis. A concomitant depletion of histochemically demonstrable cytochrome oxidase and succinic dehydrogenase in the proximal convoluted tubules and ascending limbs of Henle was noted only in those rats with the nephrotic syndrome. The relationship of these findings to proteinuria is discussed.
