Abstract
The changes in each of the 2 types of a cells were studied in alloxan diabetic rats. In spite of pronounced necrosis of the β cells, the α cells appeared unaffected during the 1st day after the alloxan injection. After 3 months of diabetes, the ratio between the number of α1 and α2 cells was significantly increased. While there was an increase in the total weight of the α1 cell system, the weight of the α2 cells probably was reduced in the permanently diabetic rats. The reactions of the α2 cells to the diabetic state are well in accord with what might be expected if these cells secreted glucagon. Keywords
