Gastric Cytoprotection

Abstract
The stomach is constantly exposed to various irritating and damaging factors, including its own acid-pepsin secretion, bile refluxed from the duodenum, indiscriminate foods at various temperatures and pH's, microorganisms, and sometimes alcohol and drugs. In spite of the constant exposure to this hostile environment, the gastric mucosa is usually able to maintain its integrity and withstand the presence of irritants and ulcerogens without being damaged.
