Abstract
We interpret the recently observed anomalies in the phonon spectra of some transition-metal compounds as resonances in the electronic polarization. These effects are described by a specific extension of the shell model. The possible connections of these anomalies to lattice instabilities and superconductivity are discussed. Keywords
