Mobility of Bobwhite Quail in Southwestern Texas

Abstract
The banding of 2,509 bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) on or near a 960-acre study area in Jim Hogg County, Texas, yielded 787 movement records on 699 individuals. Some quail are sedentary. Bobwhites as a species are capable of moving relatively long distances and some do. Personnel turnover was 72% from Fall to Spring in 55 covey groups. Covey territories over-lapped; intolerance to crowding appeared unimportant except in competition for choice resting or "headquarters" cover. Bobwhites as a species may be less sedentary than previously suspected.
