NUCLEAR INCLUSIONS IN ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Abstract
Biopsy samples of parietal cortex from 7 patients undergoing atrioventricular shunt operations were examined by EM. Five were suffering from Alzheimer''s disease. Two were subjects with normotensive hydrocephalus following previous head injuries. Intranuclear neuronal inclusions of 3 types were found. Most frequent was the intranuclear rodlet, which was commonly observed in 4 of the patients with Alzheimer''s disease, but in 1 block only from 1 of the hydrocephalus cases. The other 2 types, the spherical inclusion body and the vermicellar-like inclusion, were found less commonly in only 2 cases. No inclusions were seen in glial nuclei.
