Abstract
The irradiation of hyman lymphocytes with 5 doses of 250 kV X-rays and 5 doses of d(42 MeV)-Be neutrons was performed to obtaind dose-response curves for both radiation qualities. By using the FPG [fluorescence plus Giemsa] technique, aberration scoring was confined to 1st division cells only and dose-response curves were obtained at 3 sampling times. Sampling time independence was observed for chromosome-type aberrations and common curves could be fitted, confirming homogeneity of the initial lymphocyte population. Rbe (relative biological effectiveness) values between 1.1 and 8.8 were obtained for dicentric yields between 0.01 and 2.0 per cell. Some variabilities were encountered for other aberration types. Mitotic delay showed an rbe of .apprx. 1.75. There was no evidence for any induction of SCE [sister chromatid exchange] by either X-rays neutrons, up to the highest doses used.
