Relationship between Dental Caries Activity and the Fluoride Level and Lactobacillus Count in Saliva

Abstract
The Lactobacillus counts and fluoride concentrations in the saliva of 34 children, aged 12-14 years, were determined and related to the number of newly decayed surfaces. No interrelation was evident between the Lactobacillus count, the fluoride concentration in saliva and the number of newly decayed tooth surfaces. It is possible that differences in fluoride concentration of saliva prior to its discharge into the oral cavity are not reflected by results using existing techniques.
