Novel R-factor borne β-lactamase of Escherichia coli confering resistance to cephalosporins

Abstract
Strains ofEscherichia coli resistant to ceftazidime but susceptible to other third generation cephalosporins were detected in three patients at two different locations (München, Bremen). The resistance was self-transmissible to otherE. coli strains. Resistance against ampicillin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol and sulfonamide was co-transferred. The isoelectric point (pI) of the β-lactamase was similar to the pI of the AER-1 and LCR-1 β-lactamases. These enzymes, however, do not confer resistance to ceftazidime. Therefore the β-lactamase described is the first example for a ceftazidimase. Ceftazidimresistente Stämme vonEscherichia coli wurden von drei verschiedenen Patienten an zwei Orten (München, Bremen) isoliert. Die Stämme waren empfindlich gegenüber anderen Cephalosporinen der dritten Generation. Die Resistenzdeterminante ist auf einem R-(Resistenz-)faktor lokalisiert und wird mit Resistenz gegenüber Ampicillin, Kanamycin, Chloramphenicol und Sulfonamid cotransferiert. Der isoelektrische Punkt der β-Laktamase liegt bei 5,9. Aufgrund der spezifischen Aktivität gegenüber Ceftazidim (Ceftazidimase) ist diese β-Laktamase von allen bisher bekannten Cephalosporinasen verschieden.This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
