MULTIPLICATION OF VARIOLA AND VACCINIA VIRUSES IN L CELLS

Abstract
Variola strains, Yamada and Lee; and vaccinia strains IHD and Downie were found to proliferate in cultures of L cells. Variola strains revealed similar growth patterns and reached a peak of infectivity in 4 days, whereas vaccinia strains attained the peak 4 days later. The 4 strains of virus were capable of agglutinating L cells within 24 to 48 hours.
