ADRENAL ESTROGENS. I. CONVERSION OF 4-C14-CORTISONE ACETATE TO 11-OXYGENATED ESTROGENS IN WOMEN

Abstract
The bioconversion of adrenal corticosteroids to phenolic estrogens was investigated. After the administration of 4-C14-cortisone acetate to a castrated and adrenalectomized woman with breast cancer, 11β-hydroxyestrone and 11β-hydroxyestradiol were isolated from the urine. The radiochemical purity and identity of the C14-labeled conversion products were ascertained by paper chromatography, counter-current distribution, and carrier crystallization. After administration of 4-C14-cortisol to the. same patient, however, this conversion did not occur.
