Asymmetric Fission in the Two-Center Model

Abstract
Four-dimensional potential energy surfaces have been calculated in the asymmetric two-center model for Fm252, Fm258, Fm264, and U236. Symmetric fission is found to be preferred in Fm258, consistent with a recent observation; symmetric mass division is strongly preferred in Fm264. Asymmetric fission is preferred in Fm252, and in U236 for which the fission path is investigated in more detail. The development of asymmetry in the fission of U236 is described.
