Electrostatic Torsion Balance for Magnetic Film Measurements

Abstract

An automatic torsion balance has been built for measurement of magnetic film properties. The use of electrostatically generated restoring torques results in a substantial simplification of the suspension system over previous arrangements. Furthermore, the reduced sensitivity of this system to background vibrations has made the attainment of 3×10⁻⁴ dyn‐cm sensitivity fairly simple.
