Effect of Mixed Culture of Various Bacteria on Candida Growth in Respect to Redox Potential

Abstract
The redox potentials of Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis were measured in single culture and in mixed culture with one or two species of various bacteria in respect to the change of pH value of the broth and growth of these Candida species in the final stage of 18 hour-cultivation. The Eh values of these two Candida species were considerably lower than those of the bacteria tested in single culture except with a few species and by mixing culture of the bacteria were significantly lowered in most of the combinations. The pH values of the Candida species were, on the contrary, higher than those of most of the bacteria in single culture and by mixing culture of the, bacteria were raised in many combinations but lowered in a few. The living cells of the Candida species were considerably smaller in numbers in mixed culture than in single one. The grade of the effects described above was, more or less, different between the two Candida species and also among the species of bacteria. The significance of redox potential value of Candida in connection with bacteria in establishment of Candida infections was also discussed from the ecological points of view.
