Abstract
Values of the elasto-optic constants of krypton were determined from intensity measurements of the Brillouin spectra of liquid and solid krypton. Firstly, the relative intensity of the longitudinal Brillouin components of the liquid and solid was measured. Secondly, the absolute intensity of scattering in liquid krypton was measured, using the scattering from a Ludox solution as intensity standard; a value of (2.0 ± 0.2) × was obtained for the scattering efficiency of liquid krypton. This value together with the known ratios of the elasto-optic constants gave , , for solid krypton at 115.5 K.
