Abstract
Matrix elements of the orbit-orbit operator are evaluated between closed shells and are shown to be non-vanishing. The contribution to the total relativistic energy is calculated and found to be significant. The presence of the spin-spin contact term is demonstrated by reducing the relativistic integrals for the Breit Hamiltonian to their nonrelativistic limit. Keywords
