How the Northern Ireland World Cup football squad led an anti-smoking campaign by the Ulster Cancer Foundation

Abstract
IN the run-up to the World Cup in 1982, the Ulster Cancer Foundation recruited the Northern Ireland World Cup squad to take part in an anti-smoking cam paign aimed at young people. Posters were distributed to schools throughout the Province. Evaluation discovered that such ventures contribute to health education in schools; that young people retain the significant messages of the campaign; and that such approaches raise aware ness among young people that physical fitness and smok ing are incompatible.
