Croonian Lecture :—Organizers in animal development

Abstract
A Croonian lecture to a lay audience. The paper outlines the scheme of normal development of the Triton egg and explains the manner in which investigations on the so-called "organizers" were initiated. Brief reviews of many experiments made by various workers are presented as examples of the manner in which different parts of the embryo interact. The subjects of center of organization, longitudinal structure, laterality, regional structure, nature of the inducing agent, and role of the organizing faculty in normal development are treated.
