Abstract
Employing a new microtechnique, a proteolytic enzyme of the catheptase type was found in the endostyles of the ammocoetes larvae of Petromyzon marinus. This enzyme is similar to that found in thyroids of higher vertebrates. It has an optimal pH of 4.0 and the hydrolysis of hemoglobin (expressed as [mu]g of tyrosine released) under the conditions employed, and within a period of 3 hours, is a straight line function of time. The hydrolytic activity of this enzyme is also a straight line function of enzyme concentration. The probable site of action of the hydrolysis of the endostylar thyroprotein is discussed in regard to the usefulness of the investigated endostylar protease. This publication has 8 references indexed in Scilit:
